The film just opened last night, and it has already broken a huge record.
Last night, IT scared up $13.5 million in Thursday night previews, beating the R-rated Thursday night record previously held by Deadpool ($12.7 million). That Thursday number is also the biggest in cinema history for a September release, as well as for a horror movie!

IT box office reaches monstrous $51 million on Friday
New Line Cinema‘s IT earned a monstrous $51 million on Friday, which marks the largest Friday ever for a September release and also the largest Friday opening for the studio. The film now has a chance of opening with more than $100 million for the weekend at the North American box office. Of the $51 million, $13.5 million came from Thursday previews, which is the largest Thursday pre-show ever for a horror movie, the largest for an R-rated movie (beating Deadpool‘s $12.7 million), the largest pre-show for a September release, and the biggest for New Line. The film also set a record for the number of locations it’s playing at for an R-rated movie with 4,103 theaters.
To put things in perspective, IT has beating the previous September opening weekend record of Hotel Transylvania 2 ($48.5 million) its first day!
Internationally, IT earned $16.1 million from about 10,560 screens in 46 markets, taking the overseas total to $25.7 million. Capturing an extraordinary 86% share of the Top 5 films in the market, the UK opened to an estimated $4.5 million from 1,342 screens, becoming the biggest opening day ever for a horror film and the biggest Warner Bros. opening day in 2017.

New Line Cinema’s IT, which has shattered September records by topping $100 million during its opening weekend.
In fact, early estimates are reporting that IT has exploded to a whopping $117 million opening weekend, making it the best horror opening ever.
That $117 million is just here in the States, with early international reports just coming in adding $62m to the total. Early Sunday morning estimates have the worldwide gross at $179 million. An interesting comparison would be to Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, which shared a similar debut. That ended its domestic run at $325m and worldwide at $750m, which would be absolutely insane for a horror film. $500+ million worldwide is all but guaranteed.
The movie is breaking all the box office records for September and October. With around $123 million this weekend, It has set the opening weekend records for any movie released between Labor Day and November, and it’s looking like the second-biggest weekend ever for an R-Rated movie (behind only Deadpool). It’s also the biggest opening weekend ever for a horror movie, and it’s looking to double the next closest competitor Paranormal Activity with $52 million) and nearly triple number three (The Conjuring with $41 million). Those records are on top of the best opening day ever for a horror flick ($51 million) and the highest Thursday night preview grosses for a horror film ($13.5 million).
Remarkably, It is putting up these gigantic numbers following two of the worst weekends of this century at the box office, and it’s doing so despite the fact that Florida — the fourth most populous state in America — is facing down Hurricane Irma while Houston — the fourth most populous city in America — is still recovering from Hurricane Harvey. That is impressive, even more so considering it was done without a single major star or even a particularly well known director (Andy Muschietti was heretofore only known for directing Mama).
Not for nothing, but It also proves once again that studios do not have to spend $200 million to make a blockbuster hit. It only cost $35 million to make. It more than tripled its budget on opening weekend.

The Stephen King adaptation about the evil Pennywise has made nearly $180m (£134m) worldwide in its opening weekend, the biggest-ever opening for a horror.

In its second weekend at the domestic box office, IT dropped just 51% and pulled in another $60 million, which is more than most expected it to make in its *first* weekend! It probably goes without saying that it’s now also the record holder for second best weekend for a horror film. Hell, it’s one of the top second weekends for any film.
As for the month of September, IT has just smashed the record for highest grossing September release of all time… in just its first 2 weekends of release.
IT‘s 10-day domestic total is now $218.7 million, totally unheard of for a horror movie and incredibly rare for rated-R movies in general. In fact, even when you adjust the numbers of past rated-R films for inflation, IT‘s total box office take is already one of the biggest in history for a rated-R film.
Worldwide, IT has now made a staggering $371 million.

There is no other way.
